I was given 4 Sophie la girafe Baby Books to facilitate this review, opinions expressed are that of my own.

Daughter with Sophie la girafe books

DK Publishing asked if I would be interested in reviewing 4 of the first Sophie la girafe baby books here on Frugal and Fun Mom. Since the books are for children ages 0-3 I thought this would be a great collection for my 13 month old son to check out.

Inspired by Sophie la girafe, these books are based on the natural rubber baby teether that has sold over 50 million units worldwide since it was first produced in France in 1961.

Sophie la girafe books

A few days later, I received four board titles including:

• My First: Sophie la girafe® : Let’s Get Counting ($5.99)

• Peekaboo! Sophie la girafe ®: Peekaboo Sophie! ($6.99)

• Baby Touch and Feel: Sophie la girafe ®: Sophie’s Busy Day ($5.99)

• Baby: Sophie la girafe ®: Colors ($6.99)

Ironically when the package arrived the person most drawn to these books was my 4 almost 5-year-old daughter, she immediately recognized Sophie from a friends toy. Together, she and her brother sat down in the living room and started checking them out.

Just seeing my daughter’s reaction to this series is really exciting because she is interested in the characters. There is Sophie of course, but there is also Lazare the cat, Gabin the bear, Josephine the mouse, Margot the turtle, and Kiwi the bird. Since they are present in each of the books she recognizes them and is intrigued by the stories. He favorite is the Sophie la girafe: Let’s Get Counting.  It goes up to 100 and she was amazed at such a BIG number.

Reading Sophie la girafe books

My daughter has taken them to show her grandparents and has wanted me to tell her the name of the characters so she could “read” the books.  My little guy has been looking them at as well, mostly putting them in his mouth at this point, but there is definitely some competition with his sister to get a hold of them. It is so cute.

From an educational aspect, I like the textures in Peekaboo Sophie, and the Baby Touch and Feel Sophie’s Busy Day.  These are definitely books that will grow with my son, that is after his sister decides to put them down. I look forward to teaching my little guy his colors and numbers with Sophie la girafe : Colors and My First: Sophie la girafe: Let’s Get Counting.

Have you ever heard of Sophie la girafe? Which book do you think your child would enjoy the most?

The following is a sponsored post on behalf of Kohl’s Cares. Opinions expressed are that of my own.

Kohl's Cares Curious George

Now through the end of September, Kohl’s is offering exclusive hardcover editions of Curious George books for only $5 each through their Kohl’s Cares Program!

Kohl’s Cares Curious George Collection books include Curious George’s First Day of School, Curious George’s Dinosaur Discovery, Curious George and the Puppies, Curious George Visits the Zoo, and Curious George Goes Camping. In addition, each book has a coordinating plush doll, and a backpack and note cards are available for purchase as well.

Curious George Kohl's Cares Collection Plush Dolls

It just so happens, that I received my package of Kohl’s Cares items the day before my youngest’s first birthday. I decided to wait on opening it up until the next day. As I revealed each item to him, he immediately took to the Curious George plush doll and started giving him hugs and kisses. He briefly looked at the books, and his older brother and sister picked them up and started checking them out. My older son had both of these read within the day, and my daughter sat right next to him and listened.

Baby with Curious George Kohl's Cares Doll

Even though my little guy isn’t quite old enough to read, in my opinion there is nothing better than giving a child access to literacy. My 2 older children have been exposed to books from an early age and have a great love of reading.  I think it is wonderful that Kohl’s is offering this collection at such an inexpensive price of $5. Not only are children benefiting from the gift of reading, but they are benefiting from the net profits through health and education programs.

Does your child love the Curious George Series? If so, which is their favorite story?

Kohl’s has raised more than $231 million for children’s initiatives nationwide through its Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program. For more information, visit kohlscares.com.

Kohls Cares pout pout fish

Want to make a difference in a child’s life when you shop?

Now through the end of June, Kohl’s is offering a Deborah Diesen Collection to benefit the Kohl’s Cares philanthropic program.

Look in stores for a display with the “The Pout-Pout Fish” and “The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark” along with coordinating plush toys and a matching tote bag. Each costs $5 and 100% of Net Profits from these sales go to Children’s Health and Education initiatives nationwide.

Kohl's Cares Pout Pout Fish

My family was sent 3 items from this collection to review. My kids had never read “The Pout-Pout Fish”, but I am happy to admit that this book has now been added to their favorites. My son even took it to school for show and tell.  Plus, the “Pout Pout” Fish and the crab are so soft, that my daughter now wants to sleep with them.

I think these would make excellent gifts for a birthday, baby shower, or would be a great present to set aside for the upcoming holidays. This is also a feel good gift because not only are you making a child happy, but you are also helping a child in need.

Have you ever read any of Deborah Diesen’s books before? Who would you gift one of these items to?

Recently, I was sent a wonderful Children’s Book to review called Temba and the Dream Giver by Pam van der Merwe. I am always looking for quality books to add to my kid’s collection, and this is one that I am happy to place with the others.

The book is about a boy named Temba who does not live in the greatest circumstances, but through faith in the “Dream Giver” God,  he is able to rise above his situation and dream for a better life. At night he dreams of visiting the beach and being in a safe place. In the day, he day dreams of eating “magazine” food and having his own bike.

This immediately sparked a conversation with my son about how many go without the creature comforts, that my son enjoys everyday.  My son was like “We eat magazine food, and I have my own bike” and he could tell that this little boy was doing without the many of the things that are just standard in my son’s life.

The illustrations in Temba and The Dream Giver created by Ria Meintjes, were descriptive and encouraged my son to ask more questions about what was happening in the book.

Ultimately this book is about having faith in God and regardless of whether or not your dreams come true, you still have your mind, and positive thinking can help uplift you out of bad situations.

Details about the Author:

Pam van der Merwe is a preschool teacher by profession with a specialty in remedial therapy.  Pam and her husband Mark have four children ranging from 10 to 25 years old.

How to find the book:

You can shop online at Deep River Books or you can also find it at Amazon.com.

Recently, I was sent a set of Christian Children’s Books to review that are part of the The Adventures of Pookster and Bubs series by Rhonda Funk. Since I am always looking for books to read to my children, I was excited to be exposed to something new.
The Adventures of Pookster and Bubs series contain lessons in virtues, and quote scripture at the end of each story that relate to the lesson.
The two books I was sent were Pookster and the Unloose Tooth, which teaches a lesson involving Patience, and Pookster and the Practically Perfect Pickle, which is a lesson in using Kind Words.
The books are recommended for age 5 and up; my son happens to be 4 but he had no problem with grasping the concepts. He liked both of these books, but what he really liked was the narration on the enclosed CDs.  I could tell that he thought it was neat that there were children’s voices and it really kept his attention.

What I really liked about the books was the dynamics of a brother sister relationship and the use of Christian principles to teach problem solving.

Details about the Author:

Rhonda Funk is an Independent Christian Artist and a Singer/ Songwriter. She is married and has 4 children. She is also the owner of Bring It On! Communications.  Rhonda took inspiration from her own children, the actual Pookster and Bubs, to create this children’s book series.   To learn more about Rhonda visit her website at www.rhondafunk.com

How to find the books:

You can shop online at Pookster and Bubs or you can also find them at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders, and CBD.

Here are the details to make locating them easier:

KD Novelties Personalized Children’s Books offered to send me a copy of one of their personalized books to review. I knew my son would get a kick out of seeing his name in print, so I made arrangements to get their “Santa Book” set up in his name.
Click here to check out the complete book details: Santa Personalized Book

The process involved furnishing my son’s name Joey and the names of 3 other relatives. About a week and half later I received a customized book with my son’s name it, with our city, and my husband’s, my daughter’s, and my name in it.

Here is an excerpt from the book:
“Ho! Ho! Ho!” Welcomed Santa. “You arrived just in time.  I need your help, Joey.” Santa Book, Story and Illustrations by Amy Bryant.

When the book came, I opened it up and read the first page to my son.  I read his name and his eyes lit up and he immediately grabbed the book from me and started turning the pages saying J-O-E-Y.  We have always made up stories with him being the main character, but this was the first time that his name was actually in print.
As you can see, as Dad reads, both my son and daughter are engrossed in the book.
