Thanks to Disney, my family got to see an advanced screening of their newest movie called “Brave” this past week. First off, before I tell you anything about this film, my family really liked it, and my kids are still talking about it.
If you are not familiar with the story, “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida, a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life aka “Her Fate”, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane).
Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her skills and resources – including her clever and mischievous triplet brothers – to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late, discovering the meaning of true bravery. The film is directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian. It is presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters. Source Disney Pixar.

This film has great visual effects, it is a wonderful story with positive female characters, it is filled with humor, and has just a little action to keep you on the edge of your seat. We got to see it in 3D, and I could hear my son saying oohs and ahhs next to me. In regards to the visual effects, in the opening scene, the illustration of the Scottish Countryside is wonderful. And, throughout the film, the attention to detail is very specific even down to the flowing hair of the main character Merida.
As for the story line, many times when you see a movie that involves a female lead character who is a princess, the film centers around her being a damsel in distress, that is waiting to be rescued by a male that is her romantic interest. This is not that kind of film. You have strong female characters including Merida and her mother the Queen Elinor, who are both stubborn and determined to push their opinions on one another and the people around them. However through some bad choices, they both realize that they have to learn to compromise, be accepting of alternative ideas, and ultimately work together to solve problems.
Humor resonants through most of the film, especially with the King, the Lords of the land and their offspring, and Merida’s 3 triplet brothers. All of these characters are constantly in some type of comical situation. At some point in the film their antics lead them to losing part of their clothes. However, it is not offensive in my opinion (nonsexual) and only involves their bottoms being shown. I asked my kids what they thought of these scenes, and they thought they were hilarious.
As for keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat, shortly after the film begins there is a scene with a bear attacking, and towards the conclusion of the film there are 2 similar scenes. I actually consulted my kid’s opinions about these parts of the film, a 3 year old and a 6 year old, and they said they were a little scary. So depending upon your child’s maturity, you may want to warn them in advance or be ready to comfort them if they get scared. Overall, this film has a great mix of components and my kids are already asking if we can purchase the DVD when it comes out. For more information on the film visit Disney.com/Brave or check them out on Facebook at facebook.com/PixarBrave or follow them on Twitter at twitter.com/disneypixar. The film is out in Theaters today June 22, 2012 and is Rated PG.
I hope you enjoy the film as much as my family did!

My daughter loves to play dress up, and especially loves to play dress up princesses in the Disney Characters. So when I was given an opportunity to select a costume from Costume Super Center, and I spotted the adorable Cinderella dress, I knew that was the one I would get.
When I received the dress in the mail, I had to hide it from my daughter until I was ready for her to wear it; This is because I knew she would go nuts over it, and she would not want to take it off. Boy was I right! She loves this dress, and we even added a crown and some shoes to make her feel even more special. She says to me “It looks sparkly, and I LOVE sparkles!”.
The dress retails for $19.99, and I selected a small, which was true to her size (4-6x). The bow is slightly different than the one pictured, and it is decorated with glitter. I recommend shaking it outside before you let your child wear it to reduce the amount of glitter that shows up around your house. In addition, it is hand washable, so that may help to reduce the glitter as well.
Costume Super Center offers a wide variety of princess costumes including Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Little Mermaid, and more. They also offer costumes for boys, teens, women, and men.
And, thanks to Costume Super Center, one (1) lucky Frugal and Fun Mom reader will receive a $25 gift Card towards a costume purchase.

Thanks to Walt Disney Studios, I was given an opportunity to see an advanced screening of the movie John Carter. I have to admit, that I really liked this movie.
Now keep in mind, I am not a follower of this book series that was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs also known for Tarzan, but I do not feel like that put me at a disadvantage for viewing the film. If anything, I am now interested in seeking out the book series, because the movie was so good.
The movie begins on Earth in the 1800′s, and suspense surrounds the character John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) and what has happened to him. As he narrates the story via his private journal, the action starts as the viewer is thrust into the events that lead John to his adventure on Barsoom A.K.A. Mars.
On Barsoom, the film introduces the character Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) a green alien inhabitant who is leader of the Tharks. John displays an amazing strength and jumping ability on this planet, and Tar Tarkas sees him as a weapon for his Tribe. Later the film introduces Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins) heir to the city of Helium. She sees John as her kingdom’s savior.
Once John Carter becomes reluctantly aligned with these two individuals, he starts making enemy’s fast. He is immediately pitted against the antagonists of the story, Sab Than, King of the Jeddak an enemy of Helium intent on taking it over, and Matia Shang Ruler of the Therns intent on causing a rift between the planet’s inhabitants. These conflicts force John to act, which in turn make him the Hero of Barsoom.
John Carter’s character presents himself as a self serving uncaring individual, but as the story progresses, you see his humanity shine through whenever he is confronted with a victim. There are moments of humor between John and the inhabitants of Earth and Barsoom. These comedic moments also include a lovable dog/ lizard like character named Woola. The movie is rated PG-13, and I think this is due to the fact that it contains gun battles, CGI alien violence and a flashback to the remains of John Carter’s murdered family. However, I do not think it was offensive or over the top in any way.
Check out the following 10 Minute Exclusive Scene.
If you are not a fan of Sci-Fi, but like suspense, action, humor, or even romance, this film fulfills all of those requirements and will leave you with wanting the story to continue on. If it is any indication of how good this movie is, the audience I was in attendance with clapped at the conclusion of the film. I look forward to taking my husband to see the film as well.

Thanks to Pillsbury and MyBlogSpark, I was sent this awesome prize pack to prepare and taste Pillsbury’s Ready Bake! Shape Disney Valentines Day Cookies.
I found these cookies at Walmart, but they can be found at most local grocers. They are ready in about 8-10 minutes and come in your family’s favorite Disney characters, including Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Disney Princesses Belle, Cinderella and Tiana.
I made the Mickey cookies with my kids last night and they thought this great! They enjoyed helping mom out by placing them on the baking rounds. Of course, the best part was trying the cookies out once they were ready. In addition, the package had 2 Disney Valentine Cards on the back, so I cut them out for the kiddos and they thought that was neat as well.
If you are limited on time and need to prepare cookies for a school or work event, I think these would work out great!
