Frugal Summer Activities for kids

I am about halfway through my kid’s summer vacation and there have been a few days where that I have gotten the “Bored Look”. We still have a way to go till school starts, and through personal experience, here are 5 Frugal Summer Activities that will keep the kiddos entertained.

1.  Dress Up - I keep all of the past Halloween Costumes, beads from Parades, old purses, and sunglasses so that my children have items to play dress-up in. I put them in a tote and when the kids get bored, I bring it out and let their creativity soar.

Dress Up Summer Activity

2. Water Colors – I picked up 3 sets of Water Color Paints for $1.99 each at Michaels.  I gave the kids a theme, construction paper, and they tried to create it in art.  Other times, I just tell them to use their imagination, and I end up with plenty of unique pieces to show for it.

One time I asked my son to create a beach scene for his bathroom, check it out here Frame Your Child’s Original Themed Artwork! Frugal and Fun Decorating Idea!

Homemade Artwork by Kids

3. Movie Time – I take advantage of the RedBox for an over night rental and we also subscribe to Netflix. If you are looking for FREE Movies, check out your local Library.

Watching FREE Big G Digital Movie Download and eating Trail MiX

4. Jewelry Making – My kids have loom band kits, and we also have a bead kit that I bought at Michaels on clearance. FYI, I see these on clearance frequently so you can also pick these up cheaper.

Here is an example of a kit we used Making Homemade Beaded Bracelets! A Surprisingly Easy Craft for the Kids!

5. Cereal Play- You can do a lot with cereal. Whether making edible jewelry, creating artwork, or coming up with games. For ideas, check out my post on 4 Fun Crafts and Activities to Do with Froot Loops! Frugal and Fun Child Activities!

What are your “Go To” activities to beat summer boredom? I would love hear your ideas!

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

Father’s Day will be here in a few weeks and if you are looking for some gift inspiration, here is a craft that my kids made for their Dad.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

We took everyday household items, along with containers destined for the recycle bin, and turned them into a fun meaningful Father’s Day present.

This can easily be customized to fit with your special Dad’s favorite things like sports or fishing, we decorated our containers with ties.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

To recreate this craft you will need:

- Container  (examples of container are icing, yogurt, spaghetti jar, peanuts, or a coffee tumbler. Tumblers like these can be found at the Dollar Store.)

- Paste

- Scissors

- Pencil

- Construction paper

- Scraps of patterned paper (scrap booking sheets or wrapping paper would work as well)

Optional: Printed strips of “My Dad is special because…”. and Tissue paper.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

Directions:

First paste a large piece of construction paper to cover the outside of the container. Then, paste on the ties.

Tip: Cut out one tie to fit the container.  Use this to trace the other ties so they are all the same size.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

Depending upon your child’s age they may be able to put together this craft completely.

I cut out the pieces in advance for my daughter and then let her do all the pasting.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

Next fill out the “My Dad is special because…” and cut this into strips. If you don’t want to use a printer, simply write the entire sentence out on pieces of construction paper.

You will need to fill this in for younger children and older children who can read and write may fill it in by themselves.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

As my children and I sat down and filled the lines in, my kids came up with statements like, “My Dad is special because he rides bikes with me.” or “My Dad is special because reads to me.”

As I read through all the comments it definitely revealed, that it wasn’t the material things that impressed our children the most, but the one on one time.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

After you have completed filling in the sheets of paper, simply fold, and place them into the container. Once all the paper was inside I added a piece of tissue paper and closed it.

The present is already wrapped and ready to go for Father’s Day.

My Dad Is Special Because Craft! A Kids #DIY Upcycling #Gift For Father’s Day! #FathersDay

When your “Special” Dad opens his gift, he will read all the wonderful things his children have said about him. He can then keep it at work or on a mantle, and the container can also serve as a holder for pens or office supplies.

Looking for other Frugal and Fun Gift Inspirations?

Here are 4 additional ideas:

Coupon Book – Have your children make a Handmade Coupon Book filled with Hug Vouchers, and other things that Dad would appreciate.

Breakfast in Bed – Let your little ones make “Breakfast in Bed”. This could be as easy as cereal or simple meals like toast and jelly. With a little help from a supervising adult, the possibilities are endless.

Car Wash – Set up a Kid’s Hands on Car Wash. Mom provides the supervision, wash rags, buckets, soap, and water. Kids use their cleaning skills.

Popsicle Frames – Either use leftover Popsicle sticks or pick up new at a craft store. Glue 4 together to create a frame. Then, label it Happy Father’s Day with a marker. You can even add adhesive magnets to the back for easy placement on a fridge or metal file cabinet.

What homemade crafts have you made for a special Dad in your life? What has been you favorite one so far?

The most rewarding part of this craft was seeing my husband light up when he read the messages. My 5-year-old daughter said to me “This was a good gift idea”.

Nuby Wash or Toss Cups

Thanks to Nuby, I was sent Wash or Toss Cups to review with my family here on Frugal and Fun Mom.

Nuby’s Wash or Toss Cups are intended for ages 9 Months and up and come in a six-pack.  The lids are interchangeable, and the cups are BPA FREE and dishwasher top rack safe.

They can be used over and over again, or can be disposed of since they are so inexpensive. I decided to wash mine and they are holding up fine, I expect to continue to use these over and over again.

Nuby Wash or Toss Cups

The tops on these cups are secure, making it tough for my toddler to pry open. Plus they are perfect for on the go, and carry a good amount of liquid (10 oz size).

I am super excited to own these cups since they are big enough for all of my kids to use, with or without the lids. In addition, they are stackable which makes them a space saver.

Nuby Wash or Toss Cups

Do you currently own any Nuby products, if so which one? What features of this product do you like?

Look for the Nuby Wash or Toss Cups at kidslandusa.com.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

I wanted to do something fun for St. Patrick’s Day for the kids, so we took 2 containers and transformed them into a Pot of Gold Craft.

Keep in mind the fun doesn’t end with the project though, it continues until the actual holiday.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

Here is what is needed to recreate this craft:

-1 Coffee Ground Container or Peanut Container
-1 piece of Black construction paper
-1 piece of Green construction paper
-1 piece of Yellow or Gold construction paper
-Scissors
-Paste
-Pencil

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

FYI, I made one in advance as an example for my 5-year-old daughter, and then prepared the parts by cutting them out for her.  She was in charge of the pasting. Depending upon your child’s maturity they may be able to do less or more.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

Here is the step by step:

First, clean out the containers and dry. Second, line up the black construction paper and cut the extra paper off.  Paste this to the container.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

Third, trace a 4 leaf clover from the green construction paper and cut it out. I made sure it was taller than the container.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

Use this to cover any gap from the black construction paper or place anywhere on the side of the container. Paste this on as well.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

Finally, use the top to trace a circle on the yellow or gold construction paper.  Discard the tops.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

After you cut it out, you will need to shave off additional pieces to make it fit into the lip of the container.

This will just lay on top so it can be easily removed.

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

As a reminder, the fun doesn’t end with the craft. The night before, I am going to put goodies from the Dollar Store inside the containers along with some coins.

On St. Patrick’s Day, the kids open up their Pot of Gold and get a surprise!

St Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Craft and Activity

My daughter has already told me that she wants me to dress up like a Leprechaun when I put the goodies in!

Do you do anything similar for your kids? How do you set up your craft? If you make one, let me know how it goes!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Spinach Flower Salad Fun For the Family

If you are looking for a fun way to feed the kids salad, or even want to dress it up for yourself, here is an easy idea!

I picked up fresh bagged spinach on sale at Publix a week or so ago (buy one get one free) and have been looking for creative ways to use it.  I asked my daughter if she would like a “Spinach Flower” for lunch and her response was “YES!”. I in turn raided my fridge for what I had on hand, and assembled one for her.

Spinach Salad

Here is what I used:

Spinach leaves

Cucumber

Strawberries

Olives

Carrots

Spinach Flower

What is nice about this is, you can pretty much use whatever you have to create it!

I simply sliced each part to the desired width and layered.  It was that easy, and it was fun seeing it become a flower.

Spinach Flower in Progress

My daughter ate it all (with a side of Ranch) and told her Dad all about it. Did I mention this is healthy?

Spinach Flower Salad

I think this would also be perfect for a side dish for guests or even for a tea party.

So do you play with your food?  Any special way that you arrange veggies to make them fun?

If you make this for your family let me know how it goes!

The following is a sponsored post on behalf of Swap.com. I was also provided a shopping credit to facilitate this post, opinions expressed are that of my own.

second hand glove from swap

Recently I asked by Swap.com to shop and evaluate their website and goods here on Frugal and Fun Mom. They gave me a credit to shop their site, and I in turn navigated around and checked out the various categories.

Personally I love to shop thrift for the thrill of a great find, so this made this shopping experience fun for me.

Swap dot com

If you asked me to describe Swap.com in 3 words, I would say new, secondhand, & quality. I choose those 3 because they not only have gently used but they also have items that have never been opened.

Like New at Swap dot com shopping

According to Swap.com they are a site that specializes in buying, selling and trading high-quality kids and baby items. They have books, clothing, games, toys and even maternity clothes.

swap dot com shopping

I looked around the website and found LEGO toys, Star Wars themed merchandise, Melissa &Doug, and Build-a-Bear. I also saw craft related items, sports equipment, and clothing. Some these items were new, and some were used.

Clothing at Swap dot com shopping

I compared prices on random new items and some were cheaper than other retailers, some prices were the same, and few were slightly higher.

Stepping Stone Craft item

Since my daughter’s birthday is this month and Christmas is around the corner, I decided to purchase new items for gifting. I found a neat Stepping Stone Kit and Pop Art Necklaces. I also took a look at a couple of websites, including Amazon, to compare and find the prices on these items. On these particular ones, I found Swap.com to be cheaper.

pop art at Swap dot com item

I had also been wanting to order my daughter a baseball glove so she could go out side and play ball with her Dad and brother. I did not see a new one, but I found a pink one that was listed in Good Condition for $8.  It looked really nice based on the picture, so I decided to order that one for her as well.

Baseball Glove secondhand

Once I was finished shopping and was ready complete my order, I put in all of my shipping information, used Paypal to make the purchase, and that was it.  I even got FREE Shipping since this was my first purchase. FYI, if you login as a guest, you can shop with a credit card.

order from swap

My order came a week or so later, and everything was nicely packaged in plastic. When I opened up the baseball glove, it looked brand new.  I decided to give it to my daughter as a last-minute birthday present.  The other items were put away for Christmas.

how swap dot com works

If you are interesting in trading or selling items at Swap.com, they will sort, categorize and professionally photograph the items and let you know when the items are on your account. You select what you want in exchange for your items, or set the sales price. Paypal is required for this service. There is even an option to donate proceeds from sales to your favorite charity.

If your items have not traded in 45 days they will even buy them. Check out the Swap.com SureSell Guarantee.

What do you think of the concept of shopping thrift or consignment online? Please visit Swap.com and tell me an item that you would like to have?

I would definitely purchase from the site again and continue to compare pricing as well. I might have to test out the swapping service soon, I have toys and clothes that my kids are growing out of.

OshKosh B'gosh Holiday Clothes

Little Man is so cute in Classic OshKosh B’gosh Overalls!

This past week I got an opportunity to shop our local OshKosh B’gosh for Holiday Inspired Outfits. After looking at the displays and checking out the selection in store, the first 2 words that came to mind were ADORABLE and AFFORDABLE!

Overalls at OshKosh B'gosh

The second word AFFORDABLE actually came as a surprise to me since I always perceived OshKosh B’gosh as being expensive. I felt this way only because the product is so high quality and stands up to the test of time. I even recall an Aunt of mine combing through the Thrift Shops for Osh Kosh products since she knew how well they took wear.

Personally I can actually testify to the sturdiness of these products since my kids have worn OshKosh B’gosh.

OshKosh B'gosh Holiday Display

Armed with a 25% off $30 or More OshKosh B’gosh Coupon in hand, I decided my mission would be to purchase all 3 of my kids Holiday outfits. Since the birth of my daughter, I have tried to coordinate outfits for Christmas photos and events, and did not want this year to be any different.

Pajamas at OshKosh B'gosh

I have 3 children whose sizes range from 18 months up to size 8, and OshKosh B’gosh goes all the way up to size 12. Not only did I find cute stuff for my little man, but also found plenty of nice items for his older brother and sister.  Not to mention, I located a clearance rack!

Girl in OshKosh B'gosh Dress

The Holiday Plaid Dress that ties all three outfits together.

After some searching, I came across a plaid style sleeveless dress for my daughter and decided to use it as my inspiration for the boys outfits. The dress was red, blue, grey, and white.  Regular price was $52, but it happened to be on sale for $26.00.

The staff was extremely helpful in my mission for Holiday clothes, and one of the store associates actually helped me find coordinating jeans, and a sweater and a pullover so the boys would match. They all looked really good together.

OshKosh B'gosh Overalls

Little man modeling one of his OshKosh B’gosh Holiday Inspired Outfits.

Since they had so many sales going on in store, I ended up getting 2 outfits for the baby, a jacket, outfit, and dress for my daughter, and an outfit along with an extra pair of jeans for my oldest son. The jeans were on sale for $12, so I grab another pair. Of course I used my coupon, and saved even more through the OshKosh B’gosh Reward Program.

OshKosh B'gosh Rewards

OshKosh B’gosh shoppers get $10 in rewards for every $50 spent, so I got an extra $20 in B’gosh rewards to spend on another shopping trip!

I am so happy that I took this trip to OshKosh B’gosh. I had such a pleasant shopping experience, and now I know where I can find affordable jeans and outfits for my kiddos in the future.

Glow in the dark Gak in package

I was sent a container of Glo Blue Glow In The Dark Gak to review with my son, and it has now given him another way to enjoy playtime with Gak.

I have reviewed Gak from Nickelodeon in the past and as you may recall, it is a stretchy and squishy material that can be pulled into all kinds of directions. It can have bubbles blown into it, and creates popping and weird noises when folded over and smashed. Each package of Gak comes with a resealable air-tight container to keep it fresh and reusable.

Gak that glows in the dark

Before my son started playing with the Gak, I placed it outside in its packaging to get sun light.  We then opened up the container in the closet so he could play with it. He thought it was cool. However since only one side gets the light, as he mixed it around it lost the “glow in the dark” relatively fast. On the flip side, it does charge up quick, I just put it back under a light for about 5 -10 minutes to reactivate it again. I would encourage my son to not only play with it in the dark, but to keep playing with it in the light as well.

Glow in the dark gak in the closet

Glow In The Dark Gak comes in 3 additional colors including Glo Green, Glo White, and Glo Orange. You can find these products online and at your local Toys R Us. For more information on Gak visit gakisback.ca.

Do your children play with Gak?  If so, what is their favorite color or colors?

Packages of LunaTagz formally Flashbrite

Thanks to LunaTagz formally known as Flashbrite, I was given 3 packages of their reflective stickers to review here on Frugal and Fun Mom.

Made with genuine 3M Scotchlite reflective material, according to LunaTagz  these reflective stickers were created to help protect individuals and pets from nighttime drivers.  These stick-on patches adhere to a variety of surfaces including hats, shoes, bags, costumes, backpacks and more, and are designed to safely reflect light from over 1,000 feet away.

LunaTagz underneath

Since the days are getting shorter, and play time and sports go later into the evening, it gets harder and harder to see children at play. Plus, with Halloween in a few weeks there will be plenty of kiddos out way past dark. LunaTagz can definitely aid in the safety of children during this time of year.

Luna Tags on surface

I decided to experiment with the LunaTagz Halloween Tagz and adhere them to my sons Trick or Treat Jack O’ Lantern and to the back of this Captain America hat from the previous year’s Halloween Costume. Attaching these stickers was really easy, I simply peeled the backing off and placed them onto the items.

LunaTagz on mask

I then took my son out for a test.  I first shined a flash light and then used the flash from my camera to see the reflection. However, the real test was whether or not it would reflect a car’s headlights.

LunaTagz on child

My son and I hung the Jack O’ Lantern on the light post and we went for a ride around the neighborhood.  When we came around the corner we saw the LunaTagz reflection. This of course struck up a whole conversation about reflection and we had to go around the neighborhood a couple more times. We also looked at the reflective numbers on mailboxes and discussed the moon reflecting the sun’s light, I’m sure my neighbors wondered what we were up to.

LunaTagz on Pumpkin with headlights on

I got out of the car and took a picture without the flash this time.

I am so excited to be able to use this innovative product this Halloween and my kids are even more excited to put them on their costumes. This Halloween my kids are going to have an extra bit of protection, and I am going to have a bit more peace of mind!
