My kids wanted to decorate cookies and I wanted something that was fun, easy to do, and would keep them occupied while I did the rest of my holiday baking. I had actually seen Reindeer Cookies in some type of Pillsbury advertisement, and thought these would be fun. Of course, I had to put my own little twist to it, here is the original version Frosted Reindeer Cookies.
I made the cookies the night before so they would be cool and ready for the kids to assemble. FYI, I did use the Pillsbury sugar cookie dough. I then made up a powered sugar icing, used pretzels for the ears, a red M&M for the nose, and green M&M’s for the eyes. It was that simple.
I set both my kids up with all the parts and let them do it themselves. I had them use a spoon to spread on the icing. After they were finished, I let the icing dry, and put the cookies in separate containers labeled with each of their names.
If you need an idea on how to make the powdered sugar icing, here is a suggestion; Just start with 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar in a bowl, add a cap full (1/2 teaspoon) of almond extract, and spoon a teaspoon of water on top and stir. Keep adding a teaspoon of water until you have reached the desired thickness of the icing.
I hope you enjoy this as well with your family, and Happy Holidays!
